WHAT IS THE COST OF SIN TO THE EARTH?
Please be aware the calculation of such a cost would have to be determined from the dawn of civilization - or biblically speaking - from the moment that Adam and Eve committed the first sin of disobedience and were put out of the Garden of Eden to our current time.
How would you perform such a calculation and what would be the "factors" of sin that you would consider in your determination of the cost of sin to the Earth? The Holy Bible indicates that the cost of sin to the Earth is ubiquitous, as it is written in Romans 8: 19-23
"All creation is eagerly waiting for God to reveal who his children are. Creation was subjected to frustration but not by its own choice. The one who subjected it to frustration did so in the hope that it would also be set free from slavery to decay in order to share the glorious freedom that the children of God will have. We know that all creation has been groaning with the pains of childbirth up to the present time. However, not only creation groans. We, who have the Spirit as the first of God's gifts, also groan inwardly. We groan as we eagerly wait for our adoption, the freeing of our bodies [from sin]."
The factors in such a calculation must include a measurement of the impact that sin has had on the human, environment and animal levels. On the human level, you would have to consider the impact of all of the diseases that exist, the aging process, death, birth anomalies, idolatry, all forms of sexual immorality, murder, lies, theft, envy, hatred, all forms of psychoses, gossip, greed, pride.... Can you think of others? Please keep in mind that not only the direct impact of these sins on human lives should be considered but also the indirect impact as well. We are social beings that belong to family units that comprise the communities in which we live, that comprise the cities/towns/villages of which they are a part. These cities/towns/villages comprise the nation of which they are a part and the nations are all part of the world. Sin has a ripple effect in the world in which we live.
On the environment level, you would have to consider the extremes in weather conditions, such as tsunamis, hurricanes, tornadoes, famines and earthquakes, the vast uninhabitable areas on Earth and yes - global warming. On the animal level, you would have to consider the "survival of the fittest" element that we all witness in the animal kingdom - the animal-on-animal "prey" factor.
WHY SUCH A WIDESPREAD IMPACT?
Well, it goes back to the purpose of human beings on the Earth as documented in the God's Will - Earth section. When Adam and Eve sinned, they did not sin for themselves alone, but, from their privileged position as the first, originally sinless couple, act as representatives for the entire human race. Since then sin, sinfulness, and the consequences of sin have marred all of us and plunged our world into darkness and under the power of evil and the originator of evil, Satan.
What is the cost of tears that are shed in pain and sorrow by each and every human being that ever lived on Earth? What's the cost of unfulfilled purpose in lives stolen by murders, drugs, rapes, physical and sexual abuse, lies, sexual immorality? How would you determine the costs of diminished human potential? Lack of peace?
WHY IS SIN SO OFFENSIVE TO GOD, THE CREATOR?
In the Holy Bible we read:
"Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the Earth, and all the host of them, were finished. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made." Genesis 1:31- 2:3
Sin offends God because it abuses, perverts, spoils, and destroys the good things that He has made.
